When buying a dog, what health checks would you need done on the dog?

I am looking to buy a dog, but I don’t know a lot about the health checks (like rabies vaccinations, de-worming etc). What health checks do I need to look for if I want to buy a new dog?

An ethical breeder health tests for all known conditions known to affect the breed. The breeder would select a stud dog with the phenotype (look) that “stamps his mark” on progeny, a pedigree that complement’s the dams and use current not historic results to minimize the risk of the litter inheriting a life limiting or impairing health condition.
Using the Dobermann as an example I would expect testing done for:

– Hip dysplasia
– Dilated cardiomyopathy (heart failure)
– Hypothyroidism
– Von Willebrands (blot clotting)

I would not be fobbed off with the sire and dam "passed" testing because the results may have been iffy. A breeding pair should be healthy in mind (mental stability) and body (physical health – bones/organs ect) and proved breed worthy against the standard in conformation and sport or by working ability.

If the stud dog was from a different kennel (which is common practice) a copy of the results would be held by the breeder or the stud dog owner could be contacted.

Rabies vaccination is necessary for a pet passport, but not for a dog or b*tch that will never be taken outside the UK. Part of the puppy pack typically includes when the pup was wormed, what product was used and when it’s next due for treatment.

For a purebred dog the breed club is a font of useful information on all aspects of the breed including health testing and locating a breeder who produces quality puppies from stock that conform to the standard.

I want this cut love able pet that is small can find at your locale pet store and that wont be able to be eatin by my dog or cat. I’ve wanted a cute Small Pet all my life but my mom doesn’t think that its a good idea. I’ve loved animals all my life and i really want this one

You can really get almost any pet you would like. Yes, your cats and dogs will be interested and will sniff or even bat at the cage. But telling them firmly "no" is generally enough. When you have the animal out, it is at a higher risk. Simply keep the other animals at bay. They really won’t mess with it as much as you think they will, especially after the first week. Do use caution however, and alwas keep an eye out.
I have 3 cats who were all rescued from different situations. Even the one who was living in a forest (rescued because of an injury) and has the most hunting instinct in her, has little interest in my pet rat, or any of the other small animals i’ve had.
Now for the pet I would suggest rats by all means. They should live in pairs generally though mine doesn’t. But then again, he gets nearly 5 hours of attention from me and has an oddly close bond with one of my cats (this is very rare). However, in the general situation, a same sex or neutered co-ed pair is best. Why should you get a rat? Well first off, if your pets do show any violence toward the rat (which would mostly likely be a simple swat at it) a rat is the best for defending itself if needed and making itself seem tougher, and they won’t wish to mess with it anymore. rats are not commonly tracked after by cats or dogs because they are larger, smarter, and stronger than mice.

However, rats are by far the most loyal and loving of rodents. They can be just like a dog-they can learn tricks, be potty-trained, learn their own name, come when called, play games, etc. They can also be like a cat by sitting in your lap and being pet (this is mostly true for males who are more laid-back, females are more hyper). They are very social and extremely smart. Even as i write this, my rat sits upon my shoulder sleeping contently. I’m in a different house than normal, one with both dogs and cats, and though the cats are mildly interested in the new animal, the dogs don’t care one bit.

So all in all, I would suggest you get a pair of rats after doing some research on them. However, if you cannot get a rat, the second choice would definetely be a dwarf hamster. They are very sweet and loving :)

What are some exotic animals I could have as a pet?

I really want a hedgehog but I guess you could say they are technically illegal. But my mom said that if I really wanted one she would be willing to go to a different state to buy one then go back? Would that work, its not like I’m going to brag about it to everyone I know in arizona so I get in trouble or whatever.

Anyways, what are some other Exotic Pets I can have if that wouldn’t work.

If it’s illegal don’t bother trying to keep it, not fair on the animal or you! What happens when it get sick? You’re going to have to cross state lines to find a vet and what happens when they ask for your address? Problems!!

Chinchillas are legal in Arizona, they need big big cages though (think at least 6ft tall x 4ft square for a decent set up) and can be very destructive if let out to free range or let near walls (say goodbye to wallpaper, paint, wood, down to brick they’ll go!).

Degus, I think, are legal in Arizona. They need to be kept in groups and are like a giant rat/gerbil cross. Very sociable little animals and can be quite friendly if socialised with humans properly. Need a big cage too!
